Ryan Update

At school, Ryan has moved from the 3 yr old classroom into one open spot in the 4-5 yr old classroom.  This is despite there being several kids that were older than Ryan in the previous class.  The teacher claims Ryan was most prepared to move up…I think she just didn't want to deal with him anymore.  (Just kidding.  My child is an angel.)

His recent lesson plans include:
  • Geography, where he learned all 50 states and the continents.  He's constantly coming home with odd facts like "The Washington State bird is the goldfinch".
  • Things that live underground, like worms, moles, carrots and potatoes
  • Next week's theme is recycling in preparation for Earth Day.
Since starting school, Ryan has been sick much more frequently.  He was nearly illness-free before starting school, but now he's sick at least once per month.  Also, maybe it's just his changing taste buds, but since starting school, he's a much pickier eater.  He used to love all vegetables.  Now it's a struggle to get him to eat his previous favorites like broccoli and carrots.

During Connor's 5-month portrait session, we snapped a few photos of Ryan too…

The subject of many of Ryan's drawings these days is the rocket…

This picture Ryan described as "the sun going down behind dark clouds with the stars coming out". To capture the "stars" (which are small holes in the paper) I photographed the painting in front of a window.

Happy 5 month birthday

Connor has grown a lot physically and developmentally in the past month.
  • He's up to 17.5 lbs.
  • He's become very social.   He makes continuous eye contact, babbles whenever we talk to him, is constantly laughing, loves peekaboo, and follows us (especially Ryan) around with his eyes.
  • He's teething
  • He stares and is always grabbing at our food.  We'll definitely start solid foods with the next few weeks.
  • He's now mobile!  He can get around by (very slowly) military crawling or doing a series of rolls.
  • He grasps objects and can passes it from hand to hand
  • He usually sleeps through the night (9pm - 5am)
  • He has moved out of the Co-sleeper (basinet) and into Ryan's old crib.  Ryan now has a whole twin-sized bunk bed to himself.
